In the master bedroom of this farmhouse home, an upholstered metal bed by Century Furniture is juxtaposed with a carved bench with a hair-on-hide-seat from Thrive and Design in Atlanta. Found objects were repurposed in the lamps, which rest on a metal nightstands by Made Goods. The rug is by Boga Oriental Rugs, and the draperies were made with Anna French Fabrics.
This neutral farmhouse bedroom combines masculine and feminine elements in a subtle and sophisticated design. The wood beams add rugged texture, and the eclectic seating at the end of the bed adds a creative and personal touch. Graceful lines and a warm elegance embody this newest collaboration between famed team Two Hawks Design & Development and Jaimee Rose Interiors. Completed in April of 2019, this home’s timeless aesthetic and comfortable living spaces are what life in Arcadia proper is about. Carefully curated finishes like hand-painted wood beams, generous marble countertops and lighting fixtures embellish each room to give the spaces their own unique look.
I love everything about this warm and inviting bedroom as it is a perfect example of a well-executed and harmonious design. It also shows how effective it can be to start the design of any room with a stunning piece of artwork. This is a technique that many interior designers use to create a cohesive feel to the space. You can see that the designer has pulled out the warm golden shades into the headboard and loveseat at the foot of the bed, and the grey tones into the rugs, accent chairs and nightstands. The deep ochre shades can be found in the throw pillows and the wicker table. The black framing around the windows adds contrast. Here you see a beautiful interplay between pattern and texture – that instantly creates a warm and cozy place to relax.

Your bed is the focal point of your room, and choosing the right bedding set that reflects your style is an important decision. Traditional farmhouse bedding can instantly make any room feel warm and cozy. Therefore, authenticity is key. You want a farmhouse bedroom to look inviting and feel comfortable. The same things that make a farmhouse living room so appealing and distinctive are what make a farmhouse bedroom easily identifiable: rustic elements, natural surfaces and textiles, layered pieces, and neutral palettes. When creating a farmhouse bedroom, shoot for that perfect blend of practicality and sophistication that is the hallmark of today’s decor.
What Is Farmhouse Chic?
Farmhouse chic adds a contemporary touch to traditional farmhouse interior design. It’s ideal for people who don’t like the stark minimalism of modern decor but don’t want a fussy, old-fashioned home either. Farmhouse chic gives homeowners the best of both worlds. Look for these components in a chic farmhouse bedroom:
- Clean lines
- Lack of clutter
- Reclaimed or antique elements
- Washed colour schemes
- Bits of modern design
For example, you might have a chic farmhouse bedroom that incorporates a faded antique area rug, rustic shiplap walls, and heirloom dressers, along with a more contemporary (but complementary) chandelier and sleek bed headboard.
Cozy Farmhouse Ideas
If you own a larger farmhouse, especially if it’s newly built, it likely has an open floor plan and more spacious rooms than older, smaller farmhouses. This is great for the flow of our lifestyles today, but it can be more challenging to make the home feel cozy. However, there are a number of things you can do to warm up the space.
Start by adding fireplaces wherever possible. There’s nothing like that orange flicker of flame to make any room feel instantly cozier. If a conventional fireplace isn’t possible, try a wood-burning stove or gas fireplace. Wood-burning stoves are ideal for farmhouse design because they come in so many styles, from Gustavian tiled stoves to mid-century ski chalet models.
Resist the urge to paint everything. Bare wood and exposed red brick are also warming. Leave some of the hardwood floor uncarpeted. Warm tones in flooring tend to be cozier than grey as well.
Be sure you have adequate lighting: supplement overhead fixtures and recessed lighting with floor and table lamps. Use dimmer switches to lower lighting at night and install light bulbs on the warm side. Peach tones in lampshades also add warmth.
Other things you can try to cozy up your farmhouse include:
- Add plants, vases of flowers, or dried bouquets.
- Use plenty of pillows on sofas and armchairs.
- Display personal collections on side and console tables.
- Install window treatments.
- Utilize a colour palette that’s on the warm side.

You’ll often find more of a monochromatic or pastel palette in shabby chic farmhouses. What types of items should you look for to add more shabby chic style to your farmhouse?
- Genuine farm elements, such as milk jugs, wine crates, and wire baskets, can be repurposed for new tasks
- Furniture and accessories with distressed finishes

First, divide the room into zones. The bigger the space, the more freedom you have to spread out and create separate areas for different activities. You will love having a sitting area for conversations over morning coffee. A bench or settee at the foot of the bed is handy for putting on shoes or housing a small pet’s bed. Likewise, you can arrange spots for putting on makeup, knitting, sketching, reading, letter writing, or simply enjoying a fire on a chilly night.
Speaking of fires, a farmhouse master bedroom calls out for a fireplace, so make sure you add one, even if it’s an electric wood-burning stove-style unit. You could add a little coffee bar or wine bar, so you don’t have to travel to the kitchen when you want refreshments.
If you spend a great deal of time in your main bedroom, you may wish to have a television there. That’s understandable, but rather than having an electronic screen dominating the room, think about hanging a picture frame TV that looks like a piece of art when not in use, or hide it in an antique armoire-turned-entertainment-center.
Since the master bedroom is a personal space, the wall opposite the head of the bed and the ceiling above the bed are two areas you probably spend the most time looking at. Therefore, make the most of these surfaces. If you have an accent wall of reclaimed lumber or old brick, that’s the place to put it. Think about adding beautiful wooden beams or shiplap to the ceiling. You could even commission someone to paint a nature scene there.
Avoid bright hues in the bedroom if you want to create a more restful environment. If beige and grey aren’t your cup of tea, use soft pastels or faded ocean colours. Shades of white and cream layered on each other are gorgeous in a bedroom, too.
Don’t forget to put all the bedroom lights on dimmer switches. Add small accent lamps for low lighting and group jars of candles together for a more cozy and fragrant atmosphere at night or on rainy days.
Farmhouse Bedroom on a Budget
One of the best things about farmhouse style is that it can be very budget-friendly. If you scour antique and vintage shops for finds, you’re sure to discover bargains that no one else will have. Other budget ideas include:
- Use old barn doors or wooden shutters as a headboard.
- Turn small dressers into nightstands with tons of storage.
- Make your own artwork from family photographs, old maps, or vintage nautical charts.
- Bring garden items indoors for benches, side tables, and reading chairs.
- Buy vintage bedding.
- Reuse the frames from ugly old thrift shop art.
- Hide ugly overhead light fixtures or bare bulbs with chandelier-style cover kits.
- Convert industrial-style pantry shelving into spaces for books and mementos.

Farmhouse Bedroom Colours
You’ve probably noticed a theme here when I talk about colours for the farmhouse bedroom. I always recommend keeping bedrooms soothing by using a muted colour palette, which reflects the home’s palette in general. Since farmhouse style incorporates many natural elements, it’s easy to follow nature with wood tones, soft sage green, and the pale greys of river rocks.
You should pick a colour scheme you like and won’t tire of for your bedroom, since you spend so much time there. If you’re worried that you’ll get bored with it, use ivory as a base, for example, and rotate accessory colours, like pillows and duvets, with the seasons.
Finally, it can be fun to use different colour combinations for each of your bedrooms, particularly if you have a couple of guest rooms. Each will look distinctive and unique, which is fun when you have company overnight. Try pale celadon, washed pink, or faded robin’s egg blue if you want an alternative to neutrals. Remember to add lots of natural wood and stone, and you’ll have the perfect combination to lull visitors into a wonderful sleep.

Today we begin a tour of a stunning Atlanta home where the pallet was inspired by the home owner’s (Jane Hight) vast collection of blue-and-white Imari porcelain inherited from her mother and grandmother. Having served as the accountant for interior designer Lauren DeLoach for several years, it was natural for Hight to enlist the designer’s help when decorating her home. When it came to a color palette, the pair looked no further than Hight’s beloved family porcelain. “While we knew we would use blue, finding the right shade took some study,” says DeLoach. “We didn’t want a too-saturated hue, but we didn’t want it too pale. We also needed another color to add punctuation marks here and there, so the salmon hue came from the Imari porcelain.”
