Mountain Home Interiors: The invigorating mountain air, stunning vistas, and a focus on outdoor living are undeniably appealing aspects of mountain home life. While the dramatic terrain and panoramic views might initially attract you to these higher elevations, the architecture of a mountain home goes beyond mere placement. It should resonate with its natural surroundings, fostering a profound sense of connection with the outdoors.

Take a tour of three gorgeous mountain homes in various locations designed to connect to the land, embrace modern rustic elements, and celebrate an outdoor lifestyle. Key Takeaways

  • Successful mountain home interiors are rooted in a strong connection to the surrounding landscape, using expansive glazing, natural materials, and thoughtful siting to blur the line between indoors and out.

  • Modern rustic design emerges as a unifying theme, balancing clean architectural lines with warm woods, stone, and tactile textures that ground each home in its environment.

  • Each featured residence demonstrates how interiors can frame mountain views as living artwork, allowing the scenery to guide layout, orientation, and material choices.

  • Outdoor living is treated as an extension of the interior, with seamless transitions to terraces, patios, and gathering spaces designed for year-round enjoyment.

  • Collaboration between architects, designers, and craftspeople is essential in creating mountain homes that feel both elevated and deeply connected to the land.

VACATION RETREAT IN ASPEN

Architect Charles Cunniffe proposed a design incorporating two wings to tackle topography issues. One wing contains the primary living areas and the owner’s suite, which connects to the dedicated guest area by a glass bridge. This bridge gracefully floats across the land, reimagined as a lovely Zen garden.

A generous expanse of sliding glass doors and clerestory windows runs along the great room, dining area, and game room, all seamlessly opening to a sprawling pool terrace while providing mountain views. The secluded primary suite, complete with its own private patio, is situated at the far end of the home. This adaptable home showcases well-considered spatial relationships, cohesive design forms, and a profound integration with its remarkable natural environment.

Neutral Great Room

The clients envisioned tranquil, tonal-hued rooms that would complement, rather than compete with, the surrounding scenery and emphasize the stunning views. This restrained neutral palette also showcases the homeowners’ diverse art collection, including vintage travel posters and Andy Warhol screen prints.

The great room boasts dual steel-and-glass fireplaces that anchor the home’s gathering spaces. An Isberian rug in neutral hues grounds the space, while sofas and club chairs provide a place to unwind. A custom Hubbardton Forge Griffin Starburst pendant crowns the space.

Open-Concept Living

Bathed in natural light from expansive windows, the kitchen features sleek cabinetry and a dramatic metal backsplash. Nearby, a cozy breakfast nook and a family room with an elegant stone fireplace offer inviting spaces for casual living.

This gorgeous space boasts light wood cabinetry, warm metallics, and a neutral color scheme elevated by warm textures. Oak and Opal Marquette quartz grace the kitchen’s island, while Holly Hunt stools and a Studio Van den Akker chandelier add modern elegance.

Cozy Dining Nook

Who wouldn’t enjoy the breathtaking view from this serene and sophisticated modern nook area while enjoying a morning cup of coffee or casual dining? The neutral hues allow the colors of the landscape to take center stage. Layered textures, gentle curving forms, natural elements, light wood tones, and cozy fabrics create a lovely seating area with plenty of charm.

Participatory Design

Designed for engagement, each area of this home encourages interaction. Enclosed in glass, the main wing functions as a fluid great room. Here, the living space is defined by two striking linear fireplaces, architectural marvels of glass and steel that soar to the high ceiling, also serving as subtle dividers between the dining and game rooms. With easy access to outdoor living areas, this home is mountain living at its best.

Serene & Inviting Bedroom

At the secluded end of the main wing, the owner’s suite offers a luminous and private sanctuary, complete with dual bathrooms, closets, and a dedicated office space. Quintus club chairs and an ottoman covered in a soft gray fabric compose a quiet seating area, while Holly Hunt linens and Cathers Home Pillows add warmth and texture.

ARIZONA MOUNTAIN HOME INSPIRED BY TREE HOUSES

Architect Jessica Hutchison-Rough was tasked with designing a home on a Flagstaff property bordering a golf course on one side and a national forest on the other. The Scottsdale-based clients desired a residence that would maximize the potential of its location and the area’s four distinct seasons. To achieve this, Hutchison-Rough explains, they conceived a “tree house” concept.

Great Room

Interior designer Amy Weber selected generously proportioned furniture crafted from luxurious materials in the great room to create a warm and welcoming ambiance. Leather upholstery on the sofa and club chairs, along with a nubby boucle on the lounge chairs, promotes an air of refined relaxation. Luxurious details include agate lamps on bleached-oak pedestal side tables, a contemporary light fixture, and a sumptuous area rug.

Modern Rustic Kitchen & Dining

Rustic materials such as Douglas Fir beams and industrial elements such as steel tie rods add old-age charm and a unique take on mountain living. Gold tones appear in the pair of simple, geometric light fixtures above the island and the countertops’ dramatically veined stone.  A BlueStar range and custom hood by Steel & Stone add a gourmet-kitchen aesthetic.

The kitchen’s Shaker-Style cabinetry painted a crisp white, features brass pulls and knobs.  Wood hues ranging from dark to light tones add visual interest and dimension, contrasting perfectly with white cabinetry and dark accents. Views of the outdoors bring in natural sunlight and a connection to the land.

Primary Bedroom

In a modern rustic bedroom, a large channel-stitched headboard is recessed into the wall for an enveloping feeling. The primary suite is strategically positioned to overlook the adjacent forest—protected land ensuring enduring natural views—evoking the serene sense of a secluded treehouse perched high above the ground. Reflecting the chic mountain setting, the bedroom features a Currey & Company chandelier crafted with crystals that gracefully resemble icicles hanging from branches.

Primary Bathroom

This stunning primary bathroom boasts incredible views of the surrounding forest of Ponderosa Pines. A hanging mirror ensures virtually unobstructed views, while white quartzite keeps the space light and airy. A large tub fitted with a Brizo faucet provides the perfect place to relax and soak in the views.

Outdoor Entertaining in the Trees

Beyond maximizing the scenic vistas, the clients desired a home with a distinct mountain aesthetic punctuated by unexpected details. The architect and interior designer responded by selecting materials with a rustic sensibility for both the interior and exterior.

Rubble stone clads the exterior and fronts the fireplace, while Douglas fir adds warmth to interior and exterior ceilings. This wood reappears in the columns, trusses, kitchen cabinet frames, and even the homeowners’ headboard, creating a cozy, cabin-like atmosphere.

AN ESTATE IN THE ROCKIES

Architect Brent Alm composed a contemporary mountain home anchored around a great room. It features ample windows to frame the scenery and doors that pocket away to seamlessly connect to the exterior. When designing this Colorado retreat, the goal was to create interiors with warmth and depth, combining stone, plaster, and an array of natural wood details to extend the serene surroundings.

A Harmonious Color Palette

This modern Vail residence fully embraces the outdoor mountain lifestyle, mirroring the homeowners’ transition from the island of Kauai to the Vail Valley. Designer Betsy Berry, a longtime friend since college, already understood their aesthetic.

Despite this being their first interior design collaboration, Berry skillfully balanced her clients’ inclination towards crisp whites and cool grays with a desire for a warmer, more inviting ambiance. She incorporated natural materials like wood and stone to temper the home’s spaciousness, achieving a harmonious fusion of both styles.

Embracing Natural Materials

Naturally drawn toward pattern and color, Betsy opted for interior spaces that didn’t feel over-designed to honor the Colorado vistas and offer an homage to her client’s former beloved home in Hawaii. Light white oak in the kitchen paired with vases filled with natural greenery elevate this modern mountain kitchen with stunning views. Additional design features include contrasting black elements, dining chairs with gently curving backs, and two hand-blown glass pendants floating above the kitchen island.

Outdoor Living

A heated, covered deck featuring an outdoor dining space and a built-in barbecue extends the family’s enjoyment of the fresh air for much of the year. Additionally, an outdoor hot tub and cold plunge complement their in-home sauna. “They’re not missing anything,” remarks general contractor Todd Morrison, emphasizing the collaborative effort needed to manage the property’s intricate systems and meet strict local building codes.
