How to Create a Magical Christmas Bedroom
As an interior designer, I love preparing our home for Christmas. I had only considered decorating the bedroom for the holidays once I stumbled upon Christmas bedding for children while looking for the perfect gift for my niece many years ago. I wanted to find something unique that she could enjoy for many years. Since children are so excited about Christmas, I thought a festive quilt would be fun. She was allowed to open this gift a month before Christmas, and we created a magical holiday bedroom for her. She loved it, and so did her friends.
Christmas Bedrooms Aren’t Only for Kids
Small touches in a bedroom can make a world of difference. Here are a few quick tips from the Christmas Bedding section of the Canadian Log Homes Country Decor Store.
- If you are looking for holiday bedding that works all year round, buffalo check and plaid bedding are great choices.
- If you have solid white bedding, you can place a festive throw at the end of the bed and layer on Christmas-embellished throw pillows at the top.
- Create a festive display on dressers with small metallic Christmas trees, reindeer, and candles.
- Dress your room for winter with knitted throws, sumptuous velvet blankets, faux fur pillows, and soft and cozy textures.
- Bring the outdoors in with fresh greenery and pinecones and fashion a piece to hang above a bed or place on a dresser.
- Go with traditional red and green, or hues of blue with silver or white. Rustic browns and tans also work well.
- Tie lovely ribbons on the pulls of a chest of drawers and nightstands.
- Deck your headboard with fresh pine, string lighting, or a wreath.
- Add a mini tree on a countertop or a large-scaled tree tucked into a corner.
- Add a hand-painted sign with festive typography featuring your favorite Christmas expression.
- Hang stockings from the bed frame at the foot of your bed.
- Give your bedroom a winter-wonderland feel with sparkling and frosted accessories.
- Hang a wreath from a mirror or window.
Add a Christmas Tree if you Have the Space
Nothing says Christmas like a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Depending upon the size of your room, you can incorporate a sizeable free-standing tree or a small-scale tree more suitable to display on a tabletop. A few artfully wrapped gifts bring color and pattern and elevate the look.

Add Your Favorite Christmas Scent
Festive scents, from clusters of evergreen branches, potpourri, candles, or diffusers, can help evoke fond memories. Many of our childhood memories of the season stem from walking into a home with the distinct aroma of a Nordic Fir Christmas tree, roasted chestnuts, cinnamon, cloves, gingerbread, and peppermint. It instantly sends the message that Christmas has arrived.
For an ‘all-encompassing festive atmosphere,’ create a gorgeous aroma by boiling water with spices and fresh fruits on the stove. Once it has cooled down, pour it into a spray bottle and use it as a DIY room spray. Pottery Barn also has a wide variety of candles, potpourri, and diffusers that blend the bright aromas of Christmas to create scents with seasonal depth and warmth.

Choose a Color Scheme
There are endless options when choosing a color scheme for a Christmas bedroom. Opt for festive earthy hues for rustic Christmas bedrooms, such as natural greens and browns. You can also stick to neutral shades or go bold with traditional reds and greens. Other good choices included metallics, shades of blue and crisp whites.

For a Traditional Christmas Bedroom, Add Plaid to the Mix
Timeless, festive and inviting – plaid is perfect for the holidays. Bringing holiday cheer into the bedroom with a blend of classic tartan, buffalo, and gingham check patterns in bright holiday colors is easy. Plaids look lovely layered and work well with solid colors and other patterns.
Bring plaid into the bedroom by draping plaid stockings over the end of the bed frame and adding a few plaid pillows and throws.
Evocative of a quaint and cozy cabin retreat, a plaid duvet cover can transform your bedroom. Larger-faced patterns, like buffalo plaid, feel more contemporary, while rustic decor calls for smaller checks. Try a solid duvet and plaid sheets for a dynamic visual when you turn down the bed. Faux fur or velvet pillow shams make the perfect accent for this bedscape.

Accessorize with Twinkling Lights
Twinkling lights, including a Christmas bedroom, can elevate any room to the next level. These miniatures can be lined up across a headboard, at the foot of the bed, or strung around a Christmas tree.

Bring in Cozy Festive Pillows & Throws
Try draping a plaid or solid red or green throw blanket over your bed to infuse holiday cheer. Be sure to layer pillows for added color, texture, and pattern.

Hang Your Favorite Decorations
Spruce up your bedroom by hanging your favorite ornaments, such as garlands, wreaths, stars, and window stickers. Dotting little pockets of Christmas decorations around the room will help to summon the festive spirit. If you have a four-poster bed, use the structure by adding a garland or two to the frame.

Farmhouse Christmas Bedroom Ideas
For a farmhouse-inspired Christmas bedroom, you can use neutral colors with a hint of green or incorporate vibrant plaid patterns. Mix in cozy textures, natural fibers, and winter botanicals.
To decorate a farmhouse Christmas bedroom, start by choosing a color scheme. Classic red, green, cozy neutrals, or icy blue and silver options are all great. Next, add cozy elements like plaid blankets, wool pillows, and fluffy rugs. Drape a vintage quilt or soft knit throw over the bed for a touch of rustic charm.
For an additional farmhouse touch, consider adding some simple greenery like pine branches or sprigs of eucalyptus. You can also incorporate natural elements like wood slices, bark-covered candles, or branches with lights strung on them.
Add some twinkle lights to make your farmhouse Christmas bedroom warm and inviting. String them around the headboard or over the bed for a magical touch. You can also add Christmas-themed accent pieces like a wreath on the wall, stockings on the bedposts, or a rustic wooden sign.
Finally, remember to add some holiday scents to your bedroom. Candles in scents like pine, cinnamon, or peppermint can add a festive ambiance to the space. With these simple steps, you can create a cozy and festive farmhouse Christmas bedroom that will make you feel at home.
