Understanding The Modern Country Style
The modern country style is a beautiful fusion of rustic and contemporary elements, bringing warmth and character to any home. It combines the simplicity and charm of country living with the clean lines and sophistication of modern design. It’s important to balance these two aesthetics to create a home infused with modern country charm.
When it comes to modern country interiors, think of a cozy, welcoming, and effortlessly stylish space. It’s about creating a harmonious blend of old and new, where vintage pieces coexist with sleek and modern furnishings. The contemporary country style celebrates the beauty of imperfections, showcasing natural materials and textures while incorporating contemporary design elements.
Consider elements such as exposed wooden beams, stone fireplaces, and reclaimed wood floors to create a modern country look. These features add a touch of rustic charm and provide a solid foundation for the overall design. Pair them with clean lines, minimalistic furniture, and modern finishes to achieve the desired aesthetic.

The three images above are of Leanne’s cottage in Pittsburgh. Leanne took her iconic white-on-white color palette and introduced delightful layers of texture that make you want to reach out and touch the many surfaces yourself.
The walls are coffee-stained with the leftover brew that she rubbed on the walls. She explains the outcome in the finished story: “When I came back the next day, it had set in rather, um, intensely, and I sat there thinking, Did I just ruin this project? But it actually came out beautifully. The glow that comes off of them is flattering.”
Leanne Ford Modern Contemporary Country Design
Leanne Ford is an American interior designer and TV personality known for her unique and modern approach to country-inspired design. Her work is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic emphasizing natural materials, neutral colors, and the beauty of imperfection.
Ford is also known for using vintage and unconventional elements to create spaces that feel warm, inviting, and full of character. She has appeared on several TV shows, including “Restored by the Fords” and “Rock the Block,” and has collaborated with brands such as Target and, Crate and Barrel to bring her design vision to a broader audience.
Ford’s confidence in design is what draws all of us in. Her work is instantly recognizable thanks to her signature stamp that fuses texture, nature, art, and white on white with a lot of soul. In an interview with HGTV in January 2019, Leanne described her aesthetic as “warm, easy, and minimalistic.” Natural-looking materials are her go-to look. One of the coolest things about Leanne’s aesthetic — and there’s a lot to choose from — is her out-of-the-box approach to design.
Together, she and Steve Ford restore older homes in the Pittsburgh area. She’s known for creating unique interiors — her style is often described as “modern yet lived-in” — while Steve, a licensed contractor, helps bring his sister’s design visions to fruition. This post highlights a variety of images of projects she has completed and an introduction to her collection for Crate and Barrel that articulates a modern transition to country life.

Modern Country Decorating Ideas | Key Elements
Focusing on key elements defining the style is essential to achieve the perfect modern country look. These elements will help you create a cohesive, visually pleasing space reflecting modern sophistication and country charm.
1. Choosing the Right Color Palette for a Modern Country Home
A modern country home should embrace a warm and inviting palette when it comes to color. Think earthy tones, soft neutrals, and muted hues that create a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Colors such as warm greys, soft browns, and creamy whites establish a modern country vibe well.
Incorporating pops of color through accent pieces, such as throw pillows or artwork, can add visual interest and personality to your space. Consider using shades of blue, green, or mustard yellow to infuse your home with a modern twist.

2. Furniture and Decor for a Modern Country Aesthetic
Choosing the right furniture and decor is crucial in achieving a modern country aesthetic. Opt for pieces that combine comfort, functionality, and style. Look for clean lines, sleek designs, and materials that showcase natural textures.
For seating options, consider upholstered furniture in linen or cotton fabrics for a cozy and inviting feel. Pair it with vintage and modern pieces to create an eclectic look that exudes personality. Incorporate distressed wood, wrought iron, and natural materials like rattan or jute to add texture and warmth to your space.
When it comes to decor, embrace simplicity and a less-is-more approach. Display a few statement pieces that capture the essence of the modern country style. Vintage artwork, antique mirrors, and carefully curated collections can add character and charm to your home. Incorporate rustic accents like reclaimed wood shelves and cozy textiles like chunky knit blankets and faux fur throws.
These details will add warmth and character to your space while maintaining a modern feel. Remember, the key to achieving a modern country look is finding the perfect balance between simplicity and sophistication. By carefully selecting furniture and decor that combines both elements, you can create a space that feels effortlessly elegant and inviting.

A White Kitchen Remodel in Pennsylvania with an Aegean Feel
Leanne Ford designed a white kitchen that makes the palette feel fresh again. Her secret? It’s all about the finishing touches. “The salvaged wood shelving, the faux shutters by the kitchen sink, the basket lights—those details warm everything up.”

White-Washed Dining Room with Warm Wood Accents
Leanne Ford plays with texture and contrast—and embraces an all-white palette—in her newly renovated home. This white-on-white adds an airy feel while also creating a dramatic effect. “White is the silence between the chords, the pause in the poem,” she explains. “It can be taken in any direction.” The color acts as a calming unifier in the eclectic space. It’s also the perfect canvas for showcasing all her work’s organic and textural elements. She also rarely uses window treatments as she prefers to not cover up natural light and views. Another tip: having texture on the ceiling. “It’s a forgotten space but just as important as the walls.”

Ever White Slipcover Bed
Leanne Ford’s ‘Ever’ is everything a bed should be—casual, comfortable, and soft. Slipcovered in stain-repellent white cotton, the bed shapes a dramatic and modern silhouette with clean-lined rails and a headboard that extends beyond the frame to nestle a nightstand or two. The perfect addition to a lovely country bedroom.
3. Incorporating Natural Materials and Textures
One of the defining characteristics of a modern country aesthetic is the use of natural materials and textures. By incorporating these elements into your home, you can create a warm and inviting atmosphere that captures the essence of country living.
Start by considering the flooring options. Hardwood floors are popular for creating a modern country look, providing a timeless and rustic feel. If you prefer a more contemporary touch, consider using wide-plank laminate or luxury vinyl flooring that mimics the look of hardwood.
In addition to flooring, consider incorporating natural textures throughout your space. Use materials such as jute rugs, woven baskets, and linen curtains. These textures add visual interest and create a sense of comfort and coziness.
Consider using natural materials such as exposed brick or stone for a rustic touch when it comes to walls. Alternatively, you can opt for wallpaper with a subtle country-inspired pattern to add texture and depth to your space. By incorporating natural materials and textures into your home, you can create a modern country look that is both visually appealing and inviting.

“The showstopper in the master bathroom is the striking Avalon Tub in Pearl from Native Trails. With its perfectly curved form and deep interior, this concrete bathtub combines contemporary artistry and innovation.
The tub and the matching Morro Sinks are handcrafted with a breakthrough combination of natural jute fiber and cement known as NativeStone. Complete with distinctive rustic sliding barn doors, straw light fixtures, and handmade tile, the bathroom is a calming blend of clean-lined minimalism and unrefined natural charm.” ~ Dwell
“The master bathroom has started to take almost as much attention as the kitchen! People are looking for an oasis in their homes to escape from a chaotic life. To me, it’s all about the bathtub! The bigger, the better. This native trail one was just the ticket and inspired the rest of the design. We put it front and center as the main focal point and designed the rest of the space around it. The creamy stone was the perfect natural element to tie into the rest of the home design.” ~ Leanne Ford
4. Creating a Cozy and Inviting Atmosphere
Create a cozy and inviting atmosphere by carefully selecting colors, lighting, and furniture placement. Start by choosing a warm and inviting color palette for your space. Opt for earthy tones like warm grays, soft browns, and muted greens. These colors will create a sense of warmth and tranquility while maintaining a modern feel.
In terms of lighting, natural light is vital to creating a bright and airy space. Use large windows and sheer curtains to maximize the amount of natural light entering your home. Additionally, consider incorporating ambient lighting such as pendant lights or table lamps to create a cozy, intimate evening atmosphere.
Furniture placement is crucial in creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Arrange your furniture in a way that encourages conversation and interaction. Create seating areas with comfortable chairs and sofas, and add plush cushions and throws for extra comfort. By paying attention to these details and creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere, you can achieve a modern country look that feels like a sanctuary.

“The owners wanted a “lodge style” retreat for their house. So, heavy use of wood, concrete, and slate helped. We used slate as a budget and kid-friendly floor solution in the kitchen. We used a concrete skim coat for the walls to add texture, warmth, and natural elements. The biggest request from the client was to open the wall between the kitchen and the living room.” ~ Leanne Ford
5. Mixing Traditional and Contemporary Elements
One of the hallmarks of a modern country aesthetic is the seamless blending of traditional and contemporary elements. By mixing these two styles, you can create a look that is both timeless and current.
Start by incorporating traditional features such as antique furniture, vintage-inspired accessories, and classic patterns. These elements will add a sense of history and charm to your space. Mix in contemporary pieces such as sleek furniture, modern artwork, and minimalist decor to balance the traditional elements.
Consider mixing classic country-inspired prints such as gingham or floral with more contemporary geometric designs when it comes to patterns. This combination creates visual interest and adds a modern twist to your space.
Feel free to experiment with different styles and textures. The key is to balance traditional and contemporary elements that feel cohesive and harmonious.

6. Modern Country Decorating Ideas | Lighting
When creating a modern country look in your home, lighting plays a necessary role in setting the mood and enhancing the overall aesthetic.
Start by considering the natural light in your space. Use large windows and sheer curtains to maximize the amount of natural light entering your home to create a bright and airy atmosphere characteristic of a modern country home.
In addition to natural light, incorporate different types of lighting to create a layered and dynamic effect. Start with ambient lighting, such as pendant lights or chandeliers, to provide overall illumination.
Add task lighting, such as table lamps or wall sconces, to provide focused lighting for specific areas, such as reading nooks or workspaces. Finally, include accent lighting, such as spotlights or picture lights, to highlight artwork or architectural features.
Consider lighting fixtures with a rustic or vintage-inspired look to enhance the country aesthetic. For example, opt for wrought iron or distressed wood finishes for a touch of rustic charm. Alternatively, choose fixtures with clean lines and sleek finishes for a more contemporary feel. By incorporating various lighting sources and styles, you can create a modern country home that is both functional and visually appealing.

An L.A. Home with a Minimalist Aesthetic
Ford embraced the property’s concrete flooring and existing floor plan but used much of the design budget to reinvent the kitchen. Here she installed a striking grout-washed stone wall that infuses the space with organic texture.
7. Modern Country Decorating Ideas | Adding Finishing Touches with Accessories and Artwork
Pay attention to the finishing touches, such as accessories and artwork, to complete the modern country look in your home. These elements add personality and character to your space, tying the entire aesthetic together.
When it comes to accessories, opt for items that reflect the rustic charm of country living. Incorporate elements such as woven baskets, vintage-inspired vases, and ceramic or wooden accents. These details will add texture and visual interest to your space.
Artwork is another important element in creating a cohesive modern country look. Opt for pieces that reflect the countryside’s natural beauty, such as landscape paintings or botanical prints. Alternatively, consider displaying black and white photographs or abstract artwork for a more contemporary touch.
When arranging accessories and artwork, remember the principles of balance and symmetry. Create vignettes by grouping items of varying heights and sizes together. Play with different arrangements until you find a visually pleasing and harmonious combination. By paying attention to these finishing touches, you can complete the modern country look in your home and create a space that is uniquely yours.
