The autumnal palette is warm, earthy, and inviting. These earth tone hues are naturally inviting, and layering on a fall-inspired color story will make your home feel warm and welcoming. Rich and vibrant colors such as amber, ocher, and russet are evocative of gorgeous fall foliage, while wood and ceramic décor add perfectly imperfect beauty that echoes the glorious shades of the season. Here are a few ideas on how to bring a festive feel to your home for the holiday season.
Mountain Home Decorating Ideas
I thought I’d focus this month’s post on mountain home decorating ideas. The inspiration came as I was viewing RH’s past unveiling of the RH Ski House, a curated concept inspired by the world’s epic alpine destinations. The images are stunning, and I loved how these homes that are surrounded by nature benefit aesthetically through the use of natural elements. Here you see stone fireplaces, reclaimed wood furniture, rustic pottery, massive wood beams, wide wood plank flooring, and cozy textures. I’ve also included design tips on how to decorate a mountain home.

Rustic Interior Design Ideas
For this month's post on rustic interior design ideas, I thought it would be inspiring to share images from one of my favorite Architectural firms, Locati Architects. I always find myself in awe when I view their work as it transcends how one normally would perceive rustic design. They view each project as a holistic approach to connect people to the landscape through architecture. The result is a structure that is more than wood, stone, glass, and metal.
Pioneer Log Homes
I have created this post in order to feature the work of Pioneer Log Homes, located in Williams Lake, British Columbia. They primarily use Western Red Cedar for their logs. Few trees exhibit the natural character of Western Red Cedar. They love taking advantage of especially beautiful logs, highlighting gorgeous buttressing or unique burls in their design. That’s part of the charm of a log home, after all: the individual grains and contours of the wood create an utterly unique environment and summon the living, breathing forest that provided the building material in the first place.
Rustic Style Interior Design
Rustic style interior design describes a range of styles that have all have a sense of connection to the past that’s hard to resist. It’s a style that emphasizes natural materials, organic shapes, and the art of repurposing. This style also provides a wonderful showcase for ingenuity, as it provides the opportunity to incorporate Southwestern, Country, Lodge, Log Cabin, Western or Farmhouse elements, or a combination of each. Here’s a few images I’ve rounded up that feature rustic style interior design done well.
Rustic Decorating Ideas
Pottery Barn, a member of the Williams-Sonoma, Inc. portfolio of brands, introduced its stunning Fall Home Decorating Collection, which has a wonderful collection of rustic decorating ideas, from Artisanal Vintage to Farmhouse Industrial and Relaxed Rustic. The Relaxed Rustic Style is all about evoking a sense of coziness and soul and captures Provencal warmth with weathered woods, patinaed leather, contrasting tones and natural materials. The look was inspired by nature and is contrasted with warm golds and cool tones. Over-sized comfy sofas and décor that nods to the countryside all come together to create this cohesive style.
Rustic Interior Design Styles
Rustic interiors evoke a simpler time and provide a sense of connection to the past that’s hard to resist. Although it's quite common to blend different elements of each of the rustic styles together, it does help to be able to identify the core aspects of each one. Rustic interior design is unpretentious, emphasizing organic textures and shapes. It incorporates items that are homespun, timeworn and handcrafted as well as earthy colors, re-purposed objects, barn-inspired elements and weathered materials. This post introduces the many variations of the design including traditional rustic, modern rustic, industrial, southwestern and farmhouse.
Modern Mountain Home
This modern mountain home, designed by Studio McGee, is warm, luxe and inviting. Located just outside of Park City, the garage opens up to snowmobile trails, plenty of wildlife and wide-open space. The exterior is a mix of reclaimed Trestlewood, stone, steel and copper. Syd and Shea McGee launched their design firm in 2014 and it has quickly grown to become one of the most well-known design studios in the nation. Rustic Style Decor
Keep it cozy with rustic style decor. Bring in the rustic comfort of a mountain vista to your home with hand-distressed finishes, natural cowhide and updated lodge furnishings. Rustic style is about incorporating natural textiles, re-purposed wood accents and warm comforting colors. Take your cues from Mother Nature’s palette and mix in shades of browns, greens, tans, rusts and muted black tones. These earthy hues pair well with oversized furniture and time-worn accents.
Country Decorating Ideas
Country decorating is characterized as casual, comfortable and cozy, incorporating vintage accessories, handcrafted furniture, and an eclectic mix of fabrics, textures and treasured possessions. While certain elements define country style – including natural materials, rustic decor and furnishings, a surprise pop of color such as a vibrant green, can add an up-to-date twist of country charm. Embrace country charm and take a tour of a few of my favorite country interiors with a homespun style.
Coastal Decorating Ideas
There are many approaches one can take in decorating their log home aside from taking a traditional rustic or western approach. Coastal decorating is another great option that works well in rustic style construction. A coastal look can easily be achieved by incorporating a sandy palette, gentle hues of blues and greens with whitewashed accents. Nothing says “coastal living” quite like an open living room, oversized sofas, nautical stripes, and sea-inspired accents such as ropes, sailboats, and sea-side prints.

It's easy to turn your bedroom into a southwestern or rustic log cabin retreat with the following selection of rustic bedding collections and ensembles.
