Rustic Luxury Interior Design: Mountain Chalet

A traditional ski chalet accepts a fresh touch of contemporary aesthetic

Hello everyone! I’ve decided to start to build out a new section of the blog that features rustic home tours by exceptional Architects and Interior Designers.  This post features the work of Miller Roodell Architects, located in Bozeman Montana. Their design aesthetic steers them toward the textures, color palettes and material choices grounded in the surrounding region. Ultimately, their goal is to build spaces that help you experience the surroundings, instead of merely insulating you from them.

The first project of theirs that I’d like to share is a stunning rustic luxury mountain chalet located in Big Sky Montana.  The home was completed in 2019 and has 7,240 square feet  of living space.

Focused on providing their family with a cozy slope-side ski retreat, this chalet was ready for a transformation that provided a fresh take on rustic being redefined.  A contemporary aesthetic influenced the overall layout and finishes throughout the chalet.  Introducing a lounge style theater, a games/activity area and opening the floor plan of the main public spaces, make this a perfect getaway retreat for the large family and their friends to gather after a day on the slopes.

I love the contrast between the charcoal cabinets, countertops and chairs, with the warm shades of wood. A live edge table provides the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or an informal meal.

Designer Christina Peffer believes that it’s important to combine styles when working to achieve a modern luxe home:

“You can create a rustic vibe in a modern room by using wood elements, such as reclaimed wood beams and stone, keeping all finishes natural and selecting a palette that complements the natural materials. Juxtapose natural finishes with clean architectural details—wide-plank rift oak wood floors in a satin finish paired with white walls, for instance. Materials such as wood-paneled walls, field stones, black iron, brick, or a blackened wood finish (there’s a charring process that gives the wood age and character with a modern aesthetic) on either a paneled ceiling or walls create an unexpected punch. Some of our favorite types of furniture for this look are live-edge dining tables and petrified wood pieces with textured fabric on upholstery.”
